MagicJack as a landlines POTS

I have been considering the switch to MagicJack Plus and would like to know if I could install MJ along with my landline? I would not want to vacate my landline untill I was satisfied with MJ. If I could, could I use both (not at the same time)?

MagicJack and a Landline are two entirely separate things ... totally unrelated to each other.

A landline involves a telephone cable coming from the local phone company's Central Office to your home ... and you then plug a telephone into the wall jack ... and you can make and receive calls with the phone number assigned to you by the local phone company.

MagicJack has nothing whatsoever to do with the Phone Company, the local Central Office, the telephone cable, the telephone wall plug, or the landline phone number.

MagicJack works over the internet, not over phone company wires. It works through your CableModem (or DSL line) ... and the calls go out and come in over the internet with no local phone company participation. Plus you get a phone number from MagicJack (not from your local phone company) ... a phone number that can be in just about any city, town, state, area code in the U.S. --- not just your home town.

So, the landline and MagicJack phones do not compete. You can call and receive at the same time with your landline and MagicJack phones. In fact, you can purchase a 2-line cordless phone system and make/receive Landline calls on Line 1 ... and make/receive MagicJack calls on Line 2. They simply do not interfere with each other.

With that said, naturally your MagicJack number must be different from your landline number.

You could ultimately port your Landline number over to MagicJack (which would automatically cancel your landline account). Your MagicJack still works over the internet, but now with your original landline number ... which, if ported over, would belong to MagicJack.

I warn against porting a beloved landline line number to MagicJack ... because when you get tired of or frustrated with MagicJack (one of the worst VoIP providers on the planet), it will be difficult as hell to return your number to the original landline company or to port the number to a 'real' VoIP provider.

Why choose MagicJack when there are numerous economical, GOOD alternatives available. Anveo and voip.ms are two that come to mind.
    .
I have used voip.ms for several years on multiple lines, including VoIP on a $10/month-data-plan-only Android cell phone, and the longer I'm with them the happier I am with their service quality, especially compared to something like MagicJack.
    .
With a service like voip.ms, be prepared for a bit of a learning curve, and a bit of time and effort to get things exactly the way you want them. Once you do though, you'll be rewarded with pretty much flawless, near 5 9's service with a feature set and a (low) price your current POTS supplier couldn't even hope to match.
    .
I'm in Quebec, so my total bill per line runs $7-$10/month/phone# including GST (5%) & TVQ (9.975%) - that's Canada Federal & Quebec sales taxes, but without a $1.50/month e911 charge. Monthly rates for U.S. addresses would be not be charged the tax and so would be 14.975% less. The price is not as low as MagicJack, but you definitely get value and quality for the difference in price.
    .
BTW, I'm not connected with voip.ms in any way. I'm just a very satisfied customer of several years. I value low price, but I value quality service and reliability even more and in this case I've gotten both.
